Patsy Surh Place is a two-phased affordable housing project in the Lincoln District of Tacoma with two buildings separated by a courtyard. Phase 1 will provide 78 affordable housing units for formerly homeless Asian and Pacific Islanders and other seniors. It starts construction in the fall of 2023. Phase 2 will follow a year later with 75 affordable units geared toward families.
The design for Phase 1 is rooted in the desire to create a building that is inspirational to the community it serves. It is defined by a strong corner mass that serves as a gateway to Tacoma’s International District and is reminiscent of a lantern, symbolizing feelings of warmth and celebration with family.
Beyond the lantern, the residential chassis is defined by vertical modulation and playful patterns to create visual interest and harmony with the corner mass. The lower level serves as a grounding base for the building and will house primarily retail uses and a community space for The Asia Pacific Cultural Center (APCC) to provide supportive services, educational and cultural activities.
