The Waverly located in Seattle’s South Lake Union neighborhood.

Once a historic industrial center, Seattle’s South Lake Union neighborhood has transformed into a thriving technology hub and innovation district. Seattle Unity, a long-time spiritual resident in South Lake Union, was intent on staying in the neighborhood, but its existing home, Seattle Unity Church, needed major improvements.

With the goal to create an improved site with housing, community spaces, and an outdoor sanctuary, it solicited proposals from 10 different design teams. Ultimately, developer Greystar and architect Weber Thompson were selected to design a 28-story residential tower, The Waverly, in addition to a new church designed by Olson Kundig.

From studios to three-bedroom units, the apartments provide a wide range of product types and configurations that appeal to urban dwellers. Out of the 374 units, 80 are under 1,000 square feet, and many are under 500 square feet. The smaller unit size was a thoughtfully considered decision to create more unique floor plan options for the diverse needs of the burgeoning neighborhood.

According to Weber Thompson, forging greater connections was central to the development. The amenity spaces welcome the broader neighborhood and activate the street through an open art gallery and outdoor gatherings. Residents also have access to more private spaces as well, including a rooftop speakeasy and lounge, an outdoor sport court, a pet spa and dog run, a fitness center, and co-working spaces.

The exterior complements Seattle Unity Church with a minimal color palette and provides a modern edge while respecting its surroundings. Interiors celebrate the city’s ongoing transformation, utilizing raw, exposed ceilings and luxurious pops of jewel tones to symbolize a dynamic, diverse population.
