For Brooks, a career in architecture began later in life, but his previous work in lithography, letterpress, and four-color printing ingrained a detail-oriented approach that still serves him today. While pursuing his interest in photography and fine woodworking, Brooks attended a summer Architecture Studio at the University of Washington. That experience cemented his impetus for a career shift. At Weber Thompson, he brings drawings and documents to the finish line and enjoys working on a variety of tasks, from coordinating consultant designs to detailing roof slopes and finish details.
Seeing a building take form during construction is pure enjoyment for Brooks. From large to small, he appreciates the details and textures of a project that create a unifying, harmonious feeling. Approaching his work with an emphasis on thinking three-dimensionally, he asks, “What’s going on nearby, vertically and horizontally? Above, below, beyond, or in the foreground, and does it work?”
Adaptive re-use is a core interest of his, both in and outside of the office. On the weekends, you can find Brooks restoring his 1971 Volkswagen Super Beetle, repurposing rebar into trellises, and building deck screens and bike storage out of reclaimed cedar.
